Of all the natural resources in the state of Maryland, perhaps none is more famous than the 30 miles of cliffs that dominate the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County. For over 150 years, fossils dislodged from the cliffs have been studied by scientists at facilities as prestigious as the Smithsonian Institution. In all, fossils of over 600 species have been identified from Calvert Cliffs, and generations of young students have had their interest and imagination sparked by the treasure trove of fossilized shark’s teeth found in the sands at the base of the cliffs.
